Hello, HouseGuests, and welcome to a brand new season of Big Brother. We are back for the ninth year and, as many of you have noticed, there have been several changes made. First, there are three hosts. Three veterans of the Big Brother games past have joined forces to create an exciting, unpredictable, and brand new experience for the contestants this summer.
Our hosts are:
Derek: Winner of Big Brother 1, Runner-Up of Big Brother 4, and Juror on Big Brother 6.
He has been involved with Big Brother since the very beginning and is back to bring you all a great season of twists.
Brett: Contestant on Big Brother 6 and 7, Co-host of Big Brother 8.
After a (pretty unsuccessful) playing career, Brett joined the hosting crew and is looking forward to sharing some brand new twists and challenges with this season’s HouseGuests.
Joe: Juror on Big Brother 7 and Winner of Big Brother 8.
A newcomer who played the cards very well his first time around, Joe was able to manipulate both sides of the house and win the game last season.
You'll also notice that we are on a NEW website! For the last eight years, Big Brother has been hosted on the website tv.com. But, after experiencing some difficulties with the website over the past few years, we have decided that a new game deserved a new website. So, this year, the game will be hosted on ProBoards. With a new host, and a new website, what better way to set up this season of Big Brother than by setting up an entirely new game?
And, finally, the moment that you have been waiting for. Every season of Big Brother, we try to find some new way to shake up the game. A season of Chaos, a Season of Backlash, a Season of Pairs, a Season of Chens, and a Season of Limbo. All seasons with twists that shook the game to its very core, forcing players to think of ways to master the twist, their fellow contestants, and their strategy to continue in the game. But one thing that these seasons have in common is a general format.
Sure, contestants were sometimes put into pairs, or dealt with the possibility that players could come back into the game through Limbo, but one thing has always stayed the same: the format. Someone wins HOH, they hold the power to nominate two people, then there's a Veto Competition, someone saves themselves, and then we vote someone out. If there's one thing you could rely on, it's the format. Well, what would happen if the format was changed slightly? What if the HOH doesn't hold all of the power? What if the HOH might have a few choices to make? What if the HouseGuests could find a way to still get what they want even if the HOH is not doing what the house wants? This season will force you to look those possibilities in the eye. Because with a new game and a new website, there's a slightly different format.
HERE IS HOW IT WILL WORK!
At the beginning of each week, we will hold an HOH Competition. The person that wins the competition will become the Head of Household. Usually, this means you get immunity for the week and you can nominate two people for eviction. Well, this season, the HOH does have power, but the HOH has options! And the house can influence the nominees like they never could before!
The person that wins HOH will receive Immunity for the week. So, this means that the person cannot be nominated for eviction and cannot be voted out. But, the HOH does not have the sole power to nominate people for eviction this time! IN FACT, THE HOH WILL HAVE A CHOICE TO MAKE BEFORE THE NOMINATIONS!
Because, this season, we are instituting the HOUSE NOMINATION VOTE! If you remember back on CBS Big Brother 1, the HouseGuests would select two people for banishment. The houseguests that received the most votes would be eligible for banishment. Now, on Big Brother, it was America that would decide which HouseGuest would leave. But, in this season, we can’t do that.
So, to recap, here’s what will happen. The HOH will win Immunity for the week. Then, all of the houseguests will get the chance to cast votes for nominations. Here is how that will work:
Each Houseguest is going to get 2 nomination votes. You will message the host with the decision of which two houseguests you would like to see nominated for eviction. YOU MUST PICK 2 DIFFERENT PEOPLE. You cannot allocate both of your votes to just one person. Whichever house guests have the two highest numbers of nomination votes will be nominated. NOTICE HOW I SAID HOUSEGUESTS, and did not designate a number. That’s because it’s possible for numerous people to be nominated for eviction! As I said, whichever houseguests get the most nomination votes will be nominated. This could mean two people, it could mean three people, it could mean more!
Example:
Let’s say that the votes are cast and these are the results:
Brett: 9
Derek: 9
Joe: 8
In this particular instance, Brett and Derek would be nominated because they have the two highest number of votes. So, there would only be two nominees this week.
BUT! Here is another scenario:
Brett: 9
Derek: 8
Joe: 8
John: 7
In this particular instance, there would be three nominees: Brett, Derek, and Joe would all have the two highest number of votes because 8 and 9 were the highest numbers. So, in this case, there would be three nominees because it’s the “two highest number of votes” that determines who is nominated.
So, it is up to the house to determine who is nominated and, in a sense, how many people are nominated! Because, depending on how the votes are allocated, it is possible that we could have the whole house, except for the HOH, nominated! How crazy is that?
Now, many of you are probably wondering: what role does the HOH play if they can’t exactly choose the nominees themselves? Well, that is where the twist comes into play. Because, along with Immunity for the week, the HOH has another choice to make. The HOH will have the choice to choose ONE of THREE powers that they can use during the week. The HOH will have to make the choice of which power they want to use. Here are the choices:
POWER #1: The HOH gets four nomination votes instead of two
If the HOH chooses this power, then they get double the amount of nomination votes. Because, like the rest of the house, the HOH will have a say in who gets nominated. By choosing this power, they will be allowed to cast four nomination votes instead of two.
CONSEQUENCE: With every power comes a consequence. And, for this one, if you elect to have four nomination votes, you must use those votes on four different people. So, you can’t use all four votes against one houseguest, or use a majority against one or two. If you choose this power, you have to vote for four people and they will each get one vote cast against them. This could come in handy: if there is an alliance in the house that you want to target, maybe one vote will make the difference between those people getting nominated and someone you want to keep safe of being safe. The choice is yours.
POWER #2: The opportunity to save one HouseGuest from nomination
If the HOH chooses this power, then they get to save a houseguest from being nominated and give them Immunity for the week. So, maybe you’re the HOH, and you know that there is another houseguest that is in danger and you want to save them. Using this power will guarantee that you and that other houseguest will be immune for the week and will survive to see another day.
In addition, THE PERSON THAT IS SAVED WON’T BE REVEALED UNTIL AFTER THE NOMINATION VOTES HAVE BEEN CAST! This could have a great effect on the nomination results. Think of it like the Hidden Immunity Idol on Survivor. If the person you saved had one of the two highest votes, they will be saved, and the person with the next highest votes will be nominated. This could have a huge impact on who is nominated.
CONSEQUENCE: With every power comes a consequence. And, for this one, if you elect to save someone, it will be revealed to the house who you have saved after the votes have been cast. What if you have a secret alliance in the game? Have you just revealed it? Also, did you save the right person? Because this gives them Immunity for the week, no questions asked. What if they abuse that power and turn on you next week? The choice is yours.
POWER #3: The opportunity to automatically choose one of the nominees
If the HOH chooses this power, then they get to automatically choose one of the nominees for this week. So, you’re the HOH, and you are concerned that the house won’t vote someone into nomination because they’re popular, they have an alliance, etc. This will allow you to choose someone to be nominated and take some of the nominating power away from the house.
CONSEQUENCES: With every power comes a consequence. And, since this is possibly the most powerful of the three, it comes with a huge consequence. The consequence is that if the HOH does this, then the HOH WILL FORFEIT THEIR IMMUNITY FOR THE WEEK. Now, this does not mean that you are no longer HOH. You’re still HOH, but you do not have Immunity anymore if you elect to use this power. You and the rest of the house still have to nominate at least one other houseguest for eviction. By giving up Immunity, it means that you could be nominated alongside the person you nominated. Also, the house will know who you nominated as soon as you make your decision. So, it makes you question just how secure you are in the house. You could go from being safe to being the one evicted. So, do you take the chance and go after a big power play? Or will you play it safe? The choice is yours.
So, that’s how the HOH has changed this season. As soon as the HOH competition ends, the HOH will have just 30 minutes to decide which power they are going to exercise. Once they make the decision, it is final. The HOH cannot change his or her mind. After that, the HouseGuests will have the rest of the night and the following day to decide the nominations. There will always be 6 HouseGuests competing for the Power of Veto (except in the rare event that there are 6+ nominees, in that case, there would be as many POV competitors as there were nominees plus 1 for HOH). If the Power of Veto is used, the HOH will still be able to name the replacement nominee for that week.
Since the HouseGuests are already voting for the nominees, they will NOT be picking who is evicted for the week. Instead, there will be a special competition held between all the nominees, with the loser being evicted from the house.
Because the HOH does not have as much power this season due to the house deciding the week’s nominees, and not the HOH, the outgoing HOH in one week will be able to compete for the next HOH! That’s right, for the duration of the house voting twist, one HouseGuest could be the HOH every single week.
At a pre-determined point in the game, the house voting twist will end. We will let you all know when that happens and at that point the game’s rules will return to normal. HOH’s will make nominations and name replacement nominees (and will no longer will be able to compete the week after they win HOH), and the house will vote to evict a nominee instead of a challenge being held.
Good luck, expect the unexpected, and here’s to a great season!
